You are able to apply for either state funded education or private schools. A list of the schools and their websites can be found below. This gives information about the schools, we would advise that you contact the school to see if they have any spare places first.

In terms of the process for applying for state funded education, Denise Tovey is the point of contact for new admissions. She is more than happy for you to contact her with regards to your choices, particularly relating to secondary education as this is changing quite significantly in Bristol at the moment.

It will be necessary for you to apply to the Admissions Department to obtain a form on which you must state three choices, on receipt of this form, Bristol City Council will check availability and allocate a school.

Primary Education in Bristol

Local Education Authorities, LEAs are part of the local council and they are accountable for state funded education. Bristol has four LEAs. All LEA-run schools do not charge fees. In the UK education becomes compulsory the term after a child’s fifth birthday, however most normally attend school the September after their fourth birthday. Primary education is for children of ages 5 – 11 years.

The school year is divided into three terms, starting in September, with breaks for Christmas, Easter and the longer summer break, each with a half term break.

Secondary Education in Bristol

Each school has their own admissions arrangements and admissions form. Again the LEA has a list of these available. When making your decision with regards to schools the following will be an extremely helpful source in offering additional information.

Ofsted reports: The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) undertakes an annual report for each school in the country.

www.ofsted.gov.uk/reports

Performance Tables: The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) publishes annual performance tables for all schools, they offer a guide as to how schools perform.

Admissions and Appeal Procedures: You have the right to say which school you would prefer your child to attend, regardless of the schools location. However, your right to express a preference does not guarantee you a place at the school if it is oversubscribed and competition for both the ‘best’ primary and secondary is fairly competitive in Bristol.

Timing of your Application: Application forms are usually available the summer before the child is due to start school. Application forms are available within the LEA booklet. The deadline for the application form to be submitted is usually the autumn term. Late application will be processed last and you may not get your preferred choice of school.

The Admissions Process: It is important to find out who handles this: is it the school or the LEA. Each child must apply, younger siblings are not automatically allowed in. If there are sufficient places available, your child will be offered a place at the preferred school. However, oversubscribed schools are subject to the LEAs specific criteria to allocate a space.

These are normally: Siblings are already at the school; Medical, psychological or special educational reasons; Geographical position to the home.

Appeals Procedure: If you are not allocated a space at your preferred school, you will be offered an alternative. You can formally accept or appeal to an independent panel for a place at the preferred school. You will receive a letter from the admissions authority about your rights to appeal and the process that is involved.
