There are many idyllic Cheshire and Wirral market towns or villages such as Tarporley, Frodsham, Helsby, Heswall or West Kirby whereas Chester provides a faster pace of life in the City and of course so does nearby Liverpool famous most recently for being the European Capital of Culture City in 2008. Delamere Forest

Delamere Forest Park comprises over 950 hectares of mixed deciduous and evergreen forest, open grassland and wetlands. It is the largest wooded area in Cheshire and lies within the Mersey Forest. Blakemere Moss has become an excellent habitat for a wide variety of wildlife including the beautiful small tortoiseshell butterfly, greater spotted woodpecker, white faced darter dragonfly, green woodpecker, siskin and southern hawker dragonfly,and is particularly popular with ornithologists. Delamere offers the complete day out for all the family, with a wide range of facilities including bike hire, cafe, shop, Visitor Centre Go Ape! high ropes course and many car parks, picnic sites and viewpoints.

Lady Lever Art Gallery


Opened by Lord William Hesketh Lever, in memory of his wife 1922, it houses his extensive collections of fine and decorative art from the mid-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.

Outstanding furniture, the finest collection of Wedgwood jasperware in the UK, and world-famous works of art, including Pre-Raphaelite masterpieces can be found in this gallery. Featuring the work of Gainsborough, Stubbs, and Millais, and dramatic masterpieces by Constable and Turner, the sheer depth of fine and decorative art in the collection at Lady Lever Art Gallery is astounding.

During 2008 a new permanent display opened, "Lever the Collector", introducing Lever and how he built his collection and the gallery. There is also a special exhibition programme throughout the year; previous exhibitions have included Ten Drawings by Leonardo da Vinci from the Royal Collection, The Stuckists Punk Victorian and Masterpiece Watercolours.

For children there are dedicated activities throughout the year for children of all ages, including workshops and fun gallery trails.

Admission is free for all.

The gallery also houses a bistro-style cafe and excellent gift shop


Ness Botanic Gardens

Spend a relaxing day at Ness Botanic Gardens, exploring the 60 acres of landscaped gardens and discover the outstanding collections of seasonal flowers, trees and shrubs.

These outstanding Botanic gardens overlook the Dee Estuary, and contain the finest collection of rhododendron and azaleas in the Northwest. Breathtaking heather, rock, herb gardens, and an outstanding collection of Himalayan and Chinese plants are just some of the many views to enjoy at Ness.

There is a new visitor centre, which is a state of the art building designed to be sustainable and sympathetic to the environment. The spacious, bright interior houses the Four Seasons Cafe, a gift shop, a plant sales area and exhibition space.

Ness Botanic Gardens has been one of Cheshire's Gardens of Distinction in Cheshire's Year of Gardens 08 and voted Winner of Large Attraction of the Year at the Mersey Tourism Awards in May 2008
