Liking Leeds – movers to the city have their say

“Leeds is a thriving city for business with a tremendous quality of life. It attracts talented people and leading companies. CEOs and businesses could not wish for a better platform for growth regionally, nationally and internationally.”
Jeff Morris, Partner, Odgers Ray and Berndtson
Leeds is the UK’s fastest growing city with the second largest employment total outside London, an estimated 457,400 people. The ability to adapt and develop new markets has made it a national hub for commerce and industry and one of the biggest city success stories in the UK.
“I love Leeds more than anything because the people are genuine”

“It’s close to the Dales and the countryside, which is really gorgeous”

“It’s very cosmopolitan with a huge fashion direction”

“You rarely hear anyone in Leeds say ‘we can’t do that’”

“It’s a small, friendly scene with lots of bars, lots of clubs and lots of shops”

Research reveals the resoundingly positive feeling people have for the city. People who have experienced Leeds – whether it was for hours, days or years – invariably love the place, and in turn are its natural ambassadors. All who experience Leeds – its diversity, lifestyle, warmth, people and quality of life, share the same belief: if you spend time in the city, you'll grow to love it.

Shopping Leeds

It is no surprise that in a city with the economic power of Leeds, there is a dazzling array of places such as the cathedral of fashion that is the Victoria Quarter to the designer stores of The Light; the independent boutiques of the arcades and the newly renovated Grade 1 listed Corn Exchange, the newest shopping destination, Clarence Dock, has brought new retail concepts to the city of Leeds such as G-Star, Replay and Rock Couture.

Leeds boasts internationally renowned stores, many of which are flagship premises for London-based companies. A significant number of these are found under the stained glass roof of the Victoria Quarter.

The White Rose Centre offers a convenient out-of-town shopping option, with many major brands under one roof, and ample space for parking.

The Trinity Leeds development is set to provide one million square feet of retail space by integrating and renovating the area between Briggate and Park Row.

Sporting Leeds

With some of the country’s best-supported football, cricket and rugby sides, and plenty of opportunities to get involved yourself, sport in Leeds is as healthy as ever

The city’s celebrated rugby league side, Leeds Rhinos, is one of the sport’s real heavyweights, and was the best-supported rugby side of either code in the UK in 2007, so it's a good job that Headingley Carnegie Stadium can house 22,250 spectators. 2007 also saw them become Super League champions, something that could only be topped by winning the Carnegie World Club Challenge — which they did in early 2008. Rhinos are well known for their exciting style of play and, when the RFL announced the 2007 dream team, there were more Rhinos players than any other club.

Rugby union fans can enjoy some top-quality entertainment, too, as Leeds Carnegie — known until recently as Leeds Tykes — gained promotion back to the Guinness Premiership in 2007.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club are also based Headingley Carnegie Stadium and remain one of the biggest sides in the game. After a difficult period, the side was promoted in 2005 and survived relegation in 2006 before former England bowler and ballroom dancing legend Darren Gough returned to captain the side in 2007, taking them to within a couple of games of winning the County Championship. England also frequently play international test matches at Headingley, and it remains one of the country’s top cricketing venues.

In terms of football, Leeds United have struggled to live up to expectations in recent years, but they’re currently rebuilding from their position in League One. The fans remain in full support and the expectation is that the club will return to former glories in the coming years.
