In 2004, the population of the city proper was estimated at 285,100, with 441,213 living in the wider Leicester Urban Area. Leicester is the most populous city in the East Midlands. It takes its name from the heavily populated City of Leicester, traditionally its administrative centre, although the City of Leicester unitary authority is today administered separately from the rest of Leicestershire. The county borders onto Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire.
